What have you given us, Dr. Franklin?

Filed in: ,

It's Benjamin Franklin's 300th birthday.

The story goes that, as Franklin left the Constitutional Convention in 1787, he was approached by a Mrs. Powell, who asked him, "What have you given us, Dr. Franklin?"

"A republic," he replied, "if you can keep it."

With Alito, looks like that's pretty much gone, now.

Republic, is exactly what our forefathers intended. The Bill of Rights confirms their intensions, that a person has the right to their religious beliefs, and, not to believe. Black or white, straight or gay. One citizen will have the same quaranteed rights as two hundred million. We are not a Democracy, "we are a Republic, if we can keep it".
