I finally figured out what bothers me about Chastity Bono. I don't like her.
I had the chance to meet Chastity Bono in June of this year to interview her at the National Women's Music Festival. I did the interview, which was short, and in which I think i did a rather poor job as a journalist, partly because that's not my real job, and partly because I had a nagging feeling something was wrong that I couldn't put my finger on. The interview never got published in our newsletter, which was just as well, I guess, since I'm not terribly happy with it.
I figured it out when I was folding laundry today; what was wrong. I was trying really hard to think and write something nice about her, when that's really not what I thought of her. I think she's a jerk.
It's partly the coming out story. In 1986, I was already out of the closet. I came out before I started dating anyone, and was out to everyone by the time I had a girlfriend. Chastity, on the other hand, had a bunch of girlfriends and got around quite a bit before she came out even to her parents, and then it was five years before she actually came out in public. I think that's kind of sick.
I think that the gay community has some collective self-esteem issues. And one of the things that would fix some of those issues is if all of us openly-gay people got together and agreed not to fuck anyone who isn't out of the closet. If we did that, a whole bunch of people would come flying out real fast.
The other part of it is the label of "activist" that she applies to herself. I asked her about what political issues she was working on, and she visibly and audibly hesitated, and admitted that she was doing very little political work. She talked about working on on the National Employment bill by endorsing it publicly, and about speaking locally in California in the "No on Knight" campaign. But that's all that it amounted to; a couple of public speaking engagements.
She hadn't done any political lobbying either locally in Calirfornia where she lives or on a national level. She hadn't worked on any campaigns or with any political parties on shaping a platform. She's basically a talk-circuit queen and that's it. She travels around talking about her coming out story, (which seems to leave big chunks out, like her motivation) which is by now old hat. She's basically a one-trick pony cashing in from the gay and lesbian community without actually doing anything tangible on it's behalf.
And it's sad that people in the gay and lesbian community can't tell the difference between what she's doing and what real activists do.
